» Special Care Unit – UTE
The Special Care Unit (UTE) – Maria de Lourdes Moreira Leite Wing is a dedicated space for caring for children facing challenges arising from syndromes and rare diseases, often characterized by complex chronic conditions. With a total of 40 beds, the unit is designed to meet a wide range of needs, from patients requiring mechanical ventilation to those in need of palliative care.
The primary focus of this unit is to provide comprehensive support to patients who require long-term hospitalization. In this context, the aim is not only to treat the medical conditions but also to enhance the quality of life of patients and offer support to their families, who often face profound challenges when dealing with life-threatening illnesses.
Moreover, the UTE – Maria de Lourdes Moreira Leite Wing is committed to facilitating the effective transition of patients back to their homes. Discharge into the home environment is a crucial component of the unit’s holistic care approach, ensuring that patients continue receiving the care they need in a more familiar and welcoming setting. This approach seeks not only to support the physical recovery of the patients, but also to promote a smooth adaptation to home life, contributing to their long-term quality of life.
Thus, the UTE goes beyond hospital treatment; it extends its care beyond the institution’s walls, recognizing the importance of continuity and personalization of care throughout the journey of each patient and their family.
Tribute
The unit was named the Maria de Lourdes Moreira Leite Wing in honor and memory of the mother of then First Lady of Ceará, Onélia Santana, as the unit was inaugurated during the administration of Governor Camilo Santana (2019).
More than just a godmother of the project, Onélia became a symbol of strength and a true example of love and compassion for others.
